Bob Patton Asks Rep. Richardson (D-CA) to Pass the Elder Justice Act

Bob Patton, director of Business Development for the California Elder Law Center of Lakewood, CA tells a story that shows why it is so important that the nation address elder abuse. He calls on Rep. Laura Richardson (D-CA) to pass the Elder Justice Act.

There are federal laws governing domestic violence and child abuse, but none related to elder abuse. The Elder Justice Act will finally provide the national leadership needed to address the problem of elder abuse in America.

Both my son-in-law and my daughter are emotionally and finacially abusing the husband’s mom. Last year after he messed up his checking account with payday advances, lots of them, not paying them off, made his mom take nthe advances at 5 different locations. She had no roblems with the advances she got every month from her bank, she had only 5 checks she coukd protect with overdraft protion. So between his unemployment checks, daughters in home support checks and his mom’s SSI they were able to keep the checks from being deposited. The amount owed $2000, she didn’t get a dime, only abuse from my daughter.. Guess what happens? Her son only got $450 on the day they were all due. He told her he took vare of it, just so she wouldn’t complain.. Come Monday morning, 02/01/2010, she walkedto her bank to withdraw funds to pay bills, the bank put a hold on her check, red flagged her accts, aalso due to son depositing money in her account, a no no for SSI peope. So now her once cleared/no credit history-plus varius utilities bills not being paid ( in both her married name and maiden name has given her a credit risk on her credit report. I tried to warn her about what was going to happen if she kept taking those advances they didn’t need, not her responsibility to give them funds so they could get high on pot. She didn’t want to belive her son would screw her over, he did. He’s 33 yrs old, an electrician $55 an hr, when working, daughter gets in home suport checks for not taking care of her, had Sue lie to worker). Sue is 52, bi-polar, severe neck problems. She’s feeling traped, can’t stop the abusive my of my daughter. We live in Antioch CA, she only has me to back her up, all the evidence is against her only, they never went inside the payday loans locations with her., no record of who made deposits into her checking, nothing.
